OSMO OILS

100% NATURAL PLANT EXTRACT OILS FOR ALL TIMBER FINISHES

MAXI Plywood is a distributor of the OSMO Oil range of products.

Created in Germany by owners of a timber company after years of research and dissatisfaction with unreliable conventional methods, OSMO products have managed to eliminate the problems associated with conventional oil, lacquer and water based treatments. OSMO combines all the professional features of an oil based finish with the smooth surface of conventional lacquers; is simple, economical and easy to apply; plus does not emit unpleasant odours during or after application.

All OSMO Wood Finish products are based on oils and waxes- sunflower oil, carnauba wax and candelila wax, linseed, soya and thistle oils. OSMO provides a natural, environmentally friendly and safe timber coating based on clean renewable plant raw materials which means the colour surface pigments are allowed to be used in the food industry, educational and child care industries, medical industry, veterinary industries, hospitality and event industries. The OSMO finishes are safe for humans, animals and plants – an encompassing positive step in providing an eco-safe environment.

Wood is a natural material, the cell structure, similar to our skin can take on and release moisture and breathes. To prevent timber surfaces from being clogged with chemical layers, the OSMO Eco safe Natural Wood Finish range is a new system of natural plant oil and wax wood finishes – the oil penetrates the wood surface, protecting the wood from deep within and the waxes form an elastic, micro porous surface to protect the wood.

The binding agents in OSMO Wood Finishes are also based on natural plant oils which penetrate the plywoods and timbers deeply and protect it from deep within. This protective system is a major benefit against – UV rays greying the wood through the course of time and making the timber brittle; waterlogging; forms a layer so that algae and fungal spores cannot attack the timber; most insects are repelled by the natural oil ingredients and so prolong the active life of the timber products.

The OSMO Oil/Wax based finishing system Advantages

  • Protects the wood from deep within as well as protecting the timber surface
  • Does not form a film – fills the pores of the timber and protects it from damaging waterlogging
  • Forms a protecting, micro-porous surface – where the wood may still breathe and provide a better air quality and is anti-static (attracts less dust) – ideal for allergy sufferers
  • Micro-porous surface continues to absorb and release moisture without damaging the timber
  • Oil based wood finishes work without a Primer – a thin application is sufficient
  • Economical – use less per application – usually requires only 1-2 applications
  • No trace of brushstrokes – application is smooth and consistent
  • No need to thin the oil or wax – avoiding a messy, time consuming process
  • OSMO wood finishes do not peel, instead they “weather away” through the course of time. Therefore recoating is possible without sanding beforehand
  • Oils help to retain the value of the natural raw timbers
  • One system combining all the advantages

The ability to partially renovate timber surfaces for interior areas is easily possible with OSMO Oil products with a new small application after a light sanding for scuff marks, deep scratches or general damage. For general exterior use, renovation and restoration of timber and plywood exposed surfaces simply requires a new application of OSMO without sanding beforehand (if the timber was previously coated with lacquer or other oil products – sand and remove before applying OSMO).

The principal of OSMO is to manufacture and supply only products which are safe and environmentally friendly during production as well as an efficient, easy safe and great looking end application. Now available at MAXI Plywood, OSMO products may be used for Decking Protection, Interior Timber Floor Protection, Furniture & Exposed Timber Protection, Anti Slip Floor Surface, Timber Floor & Stair Colour Stains, Exterior Timber UV Protection, Timber Floor Maintenance, Top Oil for Interior Timber Kitchen and Food Surfaces, and the OSMO Liquid Wax Cleaner is recommended on all Interior Timber Surfaces.

To date, the choices have been limited to a traditional Oil-based finishing system or traditional Lacquer & Water based finishing systems. Both systems have advantages in the care and protection of timber surfaces but ultimately the protection provided is only short term and not 100% eco safe.

Making an informed decision on the correct environmentally safe protective finishing product for raw timber and plywood is now, more than ever, full of confusing options. Our generation now searches for an efficient, economical, safe and healthy alternative to chemical based plywood and timber finishes as most timber products for indoor or outdoor use require protection from the elements and wear and tear. OSMO Oil Timber Products from MAXI Plywood is the answer.

  • forms a protecting, micro-porous surface

Advantages of traditional oil-based finishes

  • Penetrate into the wood
  • “Firing“ of the wood
  • Can simply and partially be renovated
  • Do not crack, flake, peel or blister

Disadvantages

  • Deficient resistance against liquids
  • Very time-consuming maintenance

OSMO oil- /wax-based finishing systems

The Osmo finishing system

  • protects the wood from in- and outside
  • does not form a film
  • forms a protecting, micro-porous surface

Lacquers and water-based finishing systems

lacquers-water-based

This system

  • protects the wood from outside
  • is film-forming
  • generates a thick layer

Advantages of lacquers and water-based finishes

  • The finish forms a film/layer on the top of the wood surface
  • Good resistance against liquids
  • Protects from abrasion
  • Easy maintenance

Disadvantages

  • For renovation the whole area needs to be sanded
  • The surface cannot be renovated partially
  • The finish does crack, flake peel and blister
